NOCASINO is an organization dedicated to the prevention of expansion of gambling operations in the Thousand Islands Region. NOCASINO is committed to providing ongoing education, information and research about the effects of gambling on individuals as well as their families.
In 2000, Blue Diamond Resorts (Nevada Gold and Casinos, Inc. of Houston Texas) purchased 835 acres on Wellesley Island with the intention of building a destination resort project, including two hotels and conference center, tow marinas and an Indian-based casino. Describing itself as "citizens against casino gambling in the Thousand Islands region, NOCASINO was formed and successfully and single-handedly challenged them point-by-point on their casino feasibility study - and won. Nevada Gold has sold the property and left the area.
But NOCASINO's work is not done. It continues to be proactive in its focus, intent on educating and informing area residents and politicians about the inherent dangers of gambling here in the North Country. Nocasino recently conducted an independent research project with the Center of Community Studies at Jefferson Community College, Watertown and continues to sponsor symposiums with participates such as counselors, bank loan officers, school administrators, the clergy, local and state politicians, Chamber of Commerce and others.NOCASINO can provide speakers for public forums about gambling and the effects on the local environment, economy and social issues.
